For the Wauwatosa homeowners, the goal wasn’t to start over, but to enhance what already worked and bring new life to a classic space. It's the smart layout changes and carefully chosen finishes that make this kitchen look, feel, and function better.

A Careful Balance of Old and New

Remodeling an older home is always a balance, improving how the space functions while preserving the details that make it special.

In this Wauwatosa kitchen, the goal wasn’t to start over. It was to build on what already worked and thoughtfully update what didn’t.

Behind the scenes, that meant a full transformation, from structural carpentry and wall adjustments to updated electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, all working together to support a more functional, modern layout.

Rethinking the Way the Kitchen Flows

One of the key transformations came from reassessing how the space was used.

We built a new wall near the pantry area to create a dedicated spot for the refrigerator and the microwave drawer. This simple change opened the door to an even bigger enhancement: an expanded coffee-and-wine bar designed for both functionality and social interaction.

Featuring an under-cabinet refrigerator, open wine storage, glass display cabinets, and a rich red oak butcher block countertop, this new addition adds both charm and practicality to the heart of the home.

Details that Define the Space

The design honors the home's classic roots while enhancing its overall ambiance.

Bright KraftMaid Bosley Dove White cabinetry illuminates the space, complemented by striking Caesarstone Jet Black quartz countertops that offer both contrast and durability. The La Fuente Talavera washed green tile backsplash serves as a vibrant focal point, rich in character and color.

A decorative wood hood elegantly frames the range and features a two-piece crown molding detail that flows throughout the room, unifying the design. Even the finer details, like adjusting the trim to match existing doorway heights, were executed with precision to uphold a harmonious appearance.

The built-in bench seating was carefully updated, retaining its original charm while boosting its functionality.

The Work Behind the Walls

Beyond the visible updates, every system in the kitchen was improved to support modern living. New lighting, including ceiling and under-cabinet fixtures, enhances both ambiance and usability. Plumbing adjustments allowed for a deeper farmhouse sink, while HVAC updates ensured proper airflow and comfort. Every outlet and circuit was updated to meet current codes, creating a space that’s as practical as it is beautiful.

Even the original wood flooring was preserved, protected during construction, and seamlessly integrated into the final design.
